Foreword

The Museum of Music History of the Institute for Musicology of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences presents the current exhibit as a tribute to Hungarian composer, pianist, and conductor Ernő Dohnányi (1877-1960), in commemoration of the 125th anniversary of his birth. This jubilee offers an opportunity to display publically for the first time this selection of documents and memorabilia (autograph manuscripts, printed scores, posters, photographs, portraits, a piano, archival films, and recordings) from public and private collections. The systematic research and documentation of Dohnányi's multifaceted life-work has been virtually neglected in past decades. Thus, the current exhibit is only one of many possible opporiunities to examine and remember Dohnányi's great legacy.

After fleeing his homeland, Dohnányi expressed his wish in the fall of 1945 that those personal belongings to which he had relinquished claim and left in the possession of Elza Galafrés, his second wife, be bequeathed to public collections in Hungary. The process of transferring autograph manuscripts to the Music Division of the National Széchényi Library began in 1958. In December, 1962, following Dohnányi's death, his widow, Ilona Zachár Dohnányi, and his sister, Mrs. Ferenc Kováts, née Mária Dohnányi, signed contracts for the transfer of Dohnányi's estate to the Music Division of the National Széchényi Library. During the process of systematic inventory of the estate at Dohnányi's former home on Széher út, which took place in several stages, documents and relics of extraordinary significance were discovered. In 1970 the Museum of Music History assumed possession of memorabilia from Dohnányi's granddaughter, Márta Dohnányi, at which time the Library of the Institute for Musicology acquired letters and the Music Division of the National Széchényi Library acquired additional autograph manuscripts from Márta Dohnányi. In 1977 the Musem of Music History also obtained Dohnányi's Bösendorfer piano, a bust of the composer, and one of his silver laurel wreaths from Dr. Ernő Szlabey.

In addition to all of the above, extremely valuable materials relating to Dohnányi can be found in the Theatre Division and the Brochure Collection of the National Széchényi Library, the music collection of the Budapest Philharmonic Society, the Ferenc Liszt University of Music, the Music Division of the Ervin Szabó Municipal Library, the Kiscelli Museum branch of the Budapest Historical Museum, and the Institute for Musicology of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Thanks to the efforts of the recently-established (January, 2002) Ernő Dohnányi Archives here, additional autograph manuscripts and hitherto unknown pertinent materials have come to light.

This exhibit has been compiled from a selection of documents and objects from public and private collections. We would like to take this opportunity to extend our most sincere gratitude to the lending institutions and persons for assisting us in our work, and thereby greatly enriching our tribute to Ernő Dohnányi.
