A Discography of Ernő Dohnányi's Compositions

and Performing Artistry

Deborah Kiszely-Papp

Ernő Dohnányi Archives, Institute for Musicology of the

Hungarian Academy of Sciences

This discography features commercially-released recordings of Ernő Dohnányi's performances as both pianist and conductor as well as interpretations of his compositions by other artists. The first part lists recordings of his works according to opus number, followed by works without opus number and arrangements. If a recording by Dohnányi exists for a given work, it is listed first, after which interpretations by other performers appear in chronological order, with undatable recordings listed last. The second part of the discography contains recordings of Dohnányi playing and conducting other composers' works. The Ernő Dohnányi Archives maintains the discography as an ongoing database, updating and expanding it as new recordings are released and additional information becomes available.

The piano roll recordings - which were primarily, but not exclusively, made through the 1920's - in most cases precede the earliest gramophone recordings. Research and precise dating of these rolls remains a complicated task, for the rolls themselves seldom contain dates and can only rarely be examined and listened to in person. Larry Sitsky's two-volume catalogue is a tremendous step forward in the neglected area of piano roll research (see: Bibliography at the end of this chapter), but it does not contain dates for the individual rolls. Many of the invariable errors published in the manufacturing companies' catalogues have been passed on from one source to another.
