The Ernġ
Dohnányi Archives was established on January 1, 2002 by Hungarian Minister
of National Cultural Heritage Zoltán Rockenbauer in cooperation with the Institute for Musicology of the Hungarian Academy of
Sciences, Budapest. This event
represented an unprecedentedly concrete gesture by the Hungarian government to finally recognize and
support Ernġ Dohnányi's heritage in his native country at an institutional
level, 125 years after his birth. The Dohnányi Archives
seeks to fill the conspicuous gap left by the decades of silence that
overshadowed this outstanding musicians legacy in his own homeland by serving
as an international research center dedicated to the reintegration of his
lifework. Its goals include the facilitation of research for persons
interested in Dohnányi's life and work through the continuous gathering and
systematic documentation of as many source materials as possible; the support
and coordination of specific, assigned projects; the annual
publication of
its
journal, Dohnányi Évkönyv [Dohnányi Yearbook];
the
completion of a thematic catalogue of his compositions; and the
preparation of critical scores of yet unpublished works as a first step in
planning and implementing a complete works edition. It provides practical
assistance to the public on a constant basis, addressing the questions and
needs of institutions, performers, researchers, and students.
During its very eventful first year, the Dohnányi Archives received recognition
both internationally and in Hungary for its active role in initiating and
participating in a wide variety of events. Its inventory consists of over 500
archival and commercial recordings, numerous photocopies of autograph and other
manuscripts, several original autograph manuscripts, a significant number of
microfilms from the British Library and other collections, and approximately
100 printed scores, in addition to books, journals, letters, concert programs,
press clippings, photographs, relics and memorabilia. To make an
