The Erdody palace is the
only Baroque palace in the Buda castle district and is considered to be a
significant part of our architectural heritage.
Here you can find the Musicology Institute of the Hungarian Academy of
Sciences along with the Museum of Music
History. The Museum’s permanent exhibition shows examples of the Hungarian
instrumental culture. Visitors can view such unique instruments as the
tárogató, the csákány, or the Schunda pedal-cimbalom, to name but a few.
The exhibition ‘In Bartók’s workshop’, is put together from the Bartók
Archives and shows the composers
compositional methods - the birth of a
Bartók composition.
Since its inception, the Museum of Music History has organised
historical and contemporary concerts. Along with musicians and dancers, it is
now prepared to take it’s audience through the musical and dance periods of
Buda castle: from the Renaissance through to the Baroque and up until the Age
of Reform.
In the royal courts of Buda, the European dances and music trends found
keen and skilled followers. The young men studying, travelling, or doing
military service abroad as well as the music and dance teachers brought over and
handed on the latest trends. However, the relation was not one sided. West, and
Southern European dance music collections contain numerous dance names,
(Ungarischer Tantz, Ungaresca, Heyducken Tantz) suggesting that the beauty and
virtuosity of Hungarian dances also had thrilled visitors from abroad.
During these two evenings our visitors can become acquainted with the
museum’s generous collection, and take pleasure in listening to the sound of
the historical instruments as played by the Ensemble Sonatores Pannoniae. The musical compositions will be revived
through period dances with the help of
the Alba Regia dance ensemble.
